A nine-place drop is a pretty big slap in the face, even by college football standards. But after losing 30–18 to USC, Ohio State can't exactly complain that the result went unnoticed.

The latest AP poll has the Buckeyes sitting at No. 11 with a 6–2 record. That's a long way from where they were hoping to be at this stage of the season. Suddenly, they're looking in from outside the top ten, and there's plenty of work to do if they want to climb back up.

I'm not ready to write Ohio State off just yet. One bad result doesn't suddenly make a talented team useless. But let's be honest, the USC defeat raised some questions, and those won't disappear simply because the Buckeyes have another big game coming up.

Next up is Oregon, and that's where things get interesting. Ohio State needs more than a lucky escape to convince people they're still among the country's top teams. They need to show they can handle a serious opponent and put together a performance that leaves little room for excuses.

Personally, I'd want to see a convincing response before putting them straight back in the top ten. Rankings are one thing, but performances on the field are what really count.

So, was dropping nine places fair punishment, or have the poll voters gone too far?

Ohio State fans, what would you need to see against Oregon before believing this team belongs back among the top ten? Is a win enough, or do the Buckeyes need to make a statement?
