Alabama and LSU both enter this matchup with 6-2 records, yet the College Football Playoff committee has them sitting miles apart in its first rankings. Alabama is fifth. LSU is fourteenth.

That's quite a difference for two teams carrying the same number of defeats.

Now, I understand that records don't tell the whole story. Strength of schedule, quality wins and performances against ranked opponents all matter. But LSU has an opportunity to make the committee's decision look rather uncomfortable this Saturday.

And you can bet the Alabama supporters won't enjoy that conversation if things go badly.

There's another issue here. Alabama has spent years building a reputation as one of college football's biggest names. That history carries enormous weight among fans, but it shouldn't become a safety net when results start going the wrong way.

Remember, we're talking about a playoff selection process, not a lifetime achievement award.

If LSU wins, Alabama would fall to 6-3. At that point, I'd want to hear a very convincing explanation for keeping the Tide anywhere near the top of the rankings. You can't keep handing out second chances simply because the name on the helmet is familiar.

If LSU pulls off the victory, how far should Alabama fall in the next CFP rankings?

And should the committee judge the Tide more harshly because of their high starting position, or does the strength of their schedule still give them some breathing room?
