Boise State looked finished. Then Max Cutforth took over.
Trailing Texas State 39-28 late in the fourth quarter, the Broncos needed something special from their backup quarterback. Cutforth delivered three touchdown passes in the final seven minutes, leading Boise State to an incredible 46-45 victory.
His connection with freshman receiver Rasean Jones was particularly impressive. Jones caught two of Cutforth's touchdown passes, finishing with nine receptions, 117 yards and three touchdowns overall.
I'd like to see Boise State keep that passing connection involved if Cutforth gets another start. He completed eight of 13 attempts for 131 yards, which isn't a huge statistical performance, but the circumstances make it considerably more impressive.
There's also something worth remembering. Cutforth gained experience last season when Madsen suffered a season-ending injury. He clearly wasn't overwhelmed by the pressure this time.
However, one comeback doesn't automatically make him a better starting option. Boise State still needs to establish its running game and avoid putting unnecessary pressure on its backup quarterback.
If Madsen cannot play, would you give Cutforth the freedom to attack through the air, or would you protect him with a more conservative game plan?
